Symbian, the mobile open source platform of the future?
Nokia announced today its intention to buy Symbian shares it din't already own, and the start of a new Symbian Foundation with the help of other parties interested in Symbian (like AT&T, LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics, STMicroelectronics, Texas Instruments, Vodafone and others).
Nokia will contribute the Symbian and S60 software to the Symbian Foundation. Sony Ericsson and Motorola also announced their intention to contribute technology from UIQ.
The eventual goal is to propose an open source platform for mobile computing licensed under the EPL.
Although it's only an announcement at this stage, the least we can say is that it's an interesting one. Let's see what materialises, and how this Symbian Foundation and the Open Handset Alliance will do in the future.
Symbian volledig Open Source
Gisteren zei ik nog in mijn presentatie op au Café Numérique dat Symbian in de proces was om open source te wordenen vandaag kondigt de Symbian Foundation dat de Symbian OS nu voilledig onder een Open Source license gepubliceerd is. Symbian is de meest gebruikte Operating System in mobiele telefoons, maar verliest markt aandelen in de segment van smartphones, dat nue door Apple gedomineerd wordt, en met Android die elke dag belangrijker wordt..
Nokia is de grootste gebruiker van Symbian, maar het gebruikt ook Linux (Maemo) in zijn N900. Nokia promoot haar QT library om cross-platform ontwikkelingen mogelijk te maken voor Symbian en Maemo, maar ook voor Windows Mobile.
Zoals we nu al 10 jaar lang weten, is het publiceren van broncode niet genoeg om een gemeenschap te bouwen. Nu zijn ontwikkelaars nog altijd enthousiaster voor Android. Kan dit een eerste stap zijn in de goede richting voor Symbian? Het gemak van ontwikkeling en van distibutie van een applicatie is een zeer belangrijk punt voor ontwikkelaars, end daar heeft Symbian nog veel werk aan de winkel.....
